Micajah Hill
- Birth date
- The 1850 AL Blount County census lists Micajah as 37 years old, which would place his date of birth in 1812 or 1813.
- Birth place
- The 1850 AL Blount County census lists Micajah's birthplace as Tennessee. Micajah died before the 1880 AL Marshall County census, but the birthplace for the father of his children (Dorcas, Elizabeth, and William) is listed as South Carolina (although the birthplace of the father of Eunice, another daughter, shows Alabama). Census pages for sister Narcissa (older than Micajah) and Dorcas (younger than Micajah) show them born in Tennessee, so Micajah was probably born in Tennessee.
- Death
- Micajah died before the 1880 AL Marshall County census (Rachel is listed as widowed). Rachel apparently moved onto son William's homestead in February 1878, which would indicate that Micajah had died before that date. So Micajah died sometime between the 1855 Alabama state census and 1878.
- Parents
- Micajah's parents were probably Micajah Hill and Dorcas [surname unknown]. I have set up a separate page for information regarding Micajah Sr.'s family.
Rachel Martin
- Birth date
- The 1850 AL Blount County census lists Rachel as 35 years old and the 1880 AL Marshall County census lists her as 65 years old, both of which would place her date of birth in 1814 or 1815.
- Birth place
- The 1850 AL Blount County census lists her place of birth as Tennessee, but the 1880 AL Marshall County census shows Alabama.
- Death
- Rachel is present in the 1880 AL Marshall County census, when she was 65 and living with daughters Dorcas and Elizabeth on son William's homestead. Rachel and daughters were apparently still living with William when he received his land patent on 22 Jan 1883, but we have no information about her beyond that.
- Parents
- No information at all.
Marriage
Married in late 1834 in Morgan County, AL. The county marriage license is dated the "25 day of ______ 1834." The entry before is 23 Sep 1834 and the entry after is November 1834, so it must have been Sep, Oct, or Nov.
Children
Micajah and Rachel had 5 sons and 4 daughters, all born in Alabama:
- Mastin (born 1837, Jackson Co., AL, married Anastasha BARRY. Had two children: Lettie Ann and Columbus Micajah.)
From e-mail from Mike (he capitalized MASTIN because I had previously had the name listed as "Mustin"):
The son of Micajah and Rachael is MASTIN (1837-1859/1860) He does not appear in the 1860 census. The tale is that he left to join the army (no one said which one) when Columbus Micajah HILL was one year old. He was not heard of since. Columbus Micajah Hill was born April 4, 1859.
Columbus Micajah Hill died February 20, 1926 at Oktaha, Oklahoma. He is buried there. His wife Mary Jane Godfrey was born June 29, 1858 and died February 13, 1936 at Oktaha, Oklahoma, and she is buried there.
Columbus, wife Mary Jane, and mother Anna are shown on the 1880 AL Marshall County census living near his grandmother Rachel and some of Rachel's children. Columbus and family moved to Mulberry, AR in the early 1880s. His neighbors in Marshall County, the Kerrs (see Eunice, below) moved to Franklin County, Arkansas (a few miles from Mulberry) soon after and they quite possibly kept in touch. Columbus's family, like the Kerrs and William M.'s family, moved on to Oklahoma. (Thanks to Mike for information about Mastin.)
- Elijah (b. 26 Dec 1841 in AL, d. 5 Dec 1921, m. Mary Jane FRENCH. Had 5 children: William John "Willie", Rebecca Elizabeth "Becky", John Columbus, Dove Lee "Dovie", and Elijah Gordon "Gordon".) Elijah is buried at Pleaseant Valley Cemetery in Wheatland, Oklahoma. Son William was married in 1884 in Franklin County, AR, and John Columbus also married in Franklin County, AR, so this family, like Columbus (above), the Kerrs (below), and William M's family (below), moved to western Arkansas and then on to Oklahoma. (Thanks to Libby for information about Elijah.)
- Mary (born 1844 in AL)
- Leroy (born abt 1847)
- Dorcas (born 1849 in Ala, married Bob STEWART.)
- Elizabeth "Bett" (born 1853 in Blount Co, AL. Married somebody named CLARK and had a son whose name looks like "Jackson" on the 1910 census and a daughter named Lyla, both born in Arkansas.) Bett was living with her daughter's family in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma in the 1920 census.
- Eunice Rachel "Nicey" (born 1851, married James KERR. 8 children: Rachel Eunice, Mary Frances, Clara Ella Mae, William Ervin Wheat, John Wesley, Edley Leroy, Laura Eunice, and Elsie Almeda.) They lived in Marshall County, AL and moved to Franklin County, AR in the mid-1880s. The family moved to Oklahoma Territory in 1895. James and Eunice moved to Lamar County, TX prior to 1900, although many family members ended up in Oklahoma. (Thanks to Doug for information about the Kerrs.)
- John S.
- William Micajah (born in AL on 8 May 1856[according to IGI], died in AR abt 1893 [23 Jan 1893, according to IGI]). 2 sons with Mary E. SWEARINGIN: Walter Adrian and Isaac Elijah. 4 children with Adeline Marvelia SMITH: Garrett Leroy, Willie Almeda, Leta Arizona, and Paul Micajah.) William married Adeline in 1884 in Arkansas. He received a land patent in Alabama in Jan 1883, so he moved to Arkansas in 1883-1884. Another IGI submission shows that Leta Arizona was born on 31 Jul 1890 in Caldwell County, MO. According to Madge, William died in Arkansas about 1893. If the IGIs and Madge are correct then the family moved from Alabama to Arkansas to Missouri to Arkansas (with additional moves possible). Son Walter married in Ozark (Franklin County), AR and later moved to Wainwright, OK. Walter and his family moved to Norman Oklahoma in the late 1920s, where he worked at the state hospital (along with Willie's husband and Paul). Isaac Elijah became an attorney and judge in Cimarron County, Oklahoma.
Micajah and Rachel were married in Morgan County, AL in 1834.
Micajah and Rachel moved to Blount County, AL, sometime before 1850. (The family is shown in Blount Co. in the 1850 census. A Micajah Hill family was in Blount Co. in the 1840 census, but I'm not sure that it was this family.) They received a land patent in 1855 in Blount County.
I found a couple of Blount County Circuit Court suits between Micajah and nearby neighbor Jackson B. Dines from March 1852 and March 1853.
Sometime between 1856 (when son William was born) and the 1860 census, the family moved from Blount County. I found the family of son Mastin and somebody who might be son Elijah in the 1860 census, but I cannot find Micajah and Rachel anywhere in the 1860 or 1870 census pages.
Rachel and some of her children were found in Marshall County, AL, in 1880. (Rachel and two of her daughters moved to son William's homestead in Feb 1877 and they were still living with William when he received his land patent in Jan 1883.)
