HILL, MICAJAH | 10/3/1818 | COTACO | This was found by Ellen. It may be Micajah Sr. (Cotaco County was renamed Morgan County in 1821.)
I ordered the land entry file from the National Archives. All that I received back was a one page document (300dpi TIFF scan--180KB) from 1831 that states that Micajah Hill purchased the "East and South East 1/4 Section No. 25 in Township No. 7 of Range No. 2W containing 72 Acres and 96 hundredths of an acre at the rate of $1.25 per Acre" on October 3, 1818. It then goes on to state that Robert Patton paid cash on June 27, 1831 and received a patent for the land under the "Provisions of the second Section of the Act of Congress of the 31st of March, 1830, entitled 'An Act for the relief of the purchasers of the Public Lands and for the suppression of Fraudulent Practices at the Public Sales of the Lands of the United States,' and the 'Act supplementary thereto passed the 25th of February, 1831.'" I don't know about the laws referred to, but I am guessing that Micajah purchased the land on credit and never paid up. I'd love to hear from anybody who can shed light on this situation. |

HILL, MICAJAH | 10/15/1835 | 08/05/1837 | LIMESTONE | AL3540__.355 | This is the Micajah who was found in the 1840 Limestone County census. This Micajah signed a land office document with an "X" mark. |
HILL, MICAJAH | 09/29/1855 | 04/02/1857 | BLOUNT | AL3760__.201 | This land was purchased by Micajah Jr. as an adjacent property to land that he already owned. The Form of Affidavit (300dpi TIFF scan--71KB) states that he already owned the SW1/4 of SW1/4 of Section 25 of Township 11 of Range 1E. According to BLM records, this land was purchased by Francis K. Jones (signature date 4 Sep 1834, so the purchase was probably around the beginning of 1833). Micajah may have purchased the land from Mr. Jones sometime between 1833 and 1855.
Micajah signed his name to the Form of Affidavit, unlike the Micajah who purchased land in Limestone County. As an aside, a Cornelius Martin purchased other land adjacent to Micajah's. (He received three land patents, signature dates in 1858 and 1860.) He could be related to Micajah's wife, Rachel Martin. |
KERR, JAMES K | 02/01/1876 | MARSHALL | AL4020__.347 | James and Eunice (daughter of Micajah and Rachel) Kerr and family. | |
HILL, WILLIAM M | 01/22/1883 | 02/20/1884 | MARSHALL | AL4060__.159 | This is William Micajah Hill, who was found in the 1880 Marshall County census. The "Homestead Proof -- Testimony of Claimant" (300dpi TIFF scan--158KB) from the land entry file states that he moved to the land in Feb 1878 and that his family was (on 22 Jan 1883) his two children, his mother, and his two sisters. His wife was not mentioned because she had died since the 1880 census. |
HILL, MICAJAH | 11/23/1883 | 11/01/1884 | CULLMAN | AL4070__.191 | This Micajah Hill, whom I have not connected with our Micajahs, was 38 years old on 23 Nov 1883 and had a wife and four adopted children. He established residence before 14 Nov 1877. This Micajah used an "X" mark for his signature. (Cullman county is adjacent to Morgan and Marshall counties.) |
